Ongoing Research, Initiated in 2019

Our studio typically works on existing buildings with deeply collaborative design build partnerships - focusing on incremental innovation for the built environment by default - but we understand there are limits to incrementalism. With Joint Structures, we wanted to challenge ourselves to apply our process to wholly new type of construction and a potential step change in the performance of our buildings - making better, healthier, connected spaces while also providing more opportunities to rewild our world.

Our Joint Structures concept envisions the year 2075, a future where advances in transportation have opened up new types of buildings and architecture can be truly shaped by human experience.  While the transportation systems are new or near-to-market solutions (like 3D elevators or air taxis), we believe workspace will remain fundamentally a human endeavor - where people tackle most tasks effectively in small groups, clustering in larger groups for a common sense of shared purpose - and demanding abundant access to light and fresh air throughout their workday.  We trust that these consistent traits of humans approach to work will remain. As the costs of distributed workplace continue to decline, we foresee Joint Structures expanding into rural and more ecologically sensitive areas maintaining a light touch on the earth but bringing more economic opportunity to more areas of our world.
